The Sephardic Community Federation (SCF) has been at the forefront in the fight against the proposed bad deal that President Obama has reached with Iran. The SCF has been urging our Senators and members of Congress to oppose the deal.
This deal is dangerous because it legitimizes Iran’s nuclear program and does not block Iran’s path to a bomb. Instead, the deal leaves almost all of Iran’s extensive nuclear infrastructure intact.
The leadership of the SCF has held key meetings with elected officials to explain how strongly the community feels about this issue and urging them to oppose the deal. The SCF has been leading an extensive education campaign and call to action with regards to the dangers of the proposed deal. Speeches have been made at many of the shuls in Deal, and informational e-mail blasts have been sent to tens of thousands of people requesting that they contact their US Senators and member of Congress.
The good news is that Senator Schumer has publicly announced that he will oppose the Iran deal. Senator Schumer has been a long-time friend to our community, to the Jewish Community and especially to the state of Israel.
Throughout his career, the Senator has been a powerful advocate for the State of Israel, both publicly and behind the scenes. He was one of the leading voices in the Senate when he spoke out on behalf of Israel during the struggle of control in the Gaza strip in 2010. This year, Senator Schumer publicly called on fellow Democrats to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress saying the Israel-US relationship should transcend any political differences. The Senator not only attended, but publicly encouraged others to do so as well.
Each and every one of us should call his office and thank him for his courageous opposition to the Iran agreement.
For our other elected officials there is a lot of work that is yet to be done. It is extremely important that our members of Congress and Senators hear from their constituents directly. Therefore, the SCF urges the community to call and email your Senators and members of Congress ASAP and ask that they oppose this deal.
