Safeguarding Jews From Genetic Disease: DOR YESHORIM EXPANDS TO THE SEPHARDIC COMMUNITY

Sharpen your pencils and ready your notepads because this month we have a handful of new restaurant openings to share with you. The new trend seems to be opening a second restaurant location, as Pescada and Kasai have done. Some owners are opening an entirely new type of venture. These include Abigael’s Chef and owner Jeff Nathan, who’s bringing kosher artisanal fried chicken to Brooklyn, and the owners of Falafel off the Korner, who are opening the cozy Israeli spot, Amba.
It is also worth noting that many up and coming restaurants are choosing to specialize in just one particular area as opposed to offering a little bit of everything. Many kosher restaurants try to please all of their customers by providing items across the spectrum, like serving sushi and pizza in the same space - a practice you would never see in Japan! The new Raw Poke Bar in Florida offers just Poke Bowls which we have yet to see in the kosher culinary space. Jeff Nathan will be doing a specialty fried chicken shop. Lolli Bop Café& Play
offers a space for kids to hang out and let their imaginations run wild. Whichever places you choose to frequent this year, we hope you enjoy the experience – and don’t forget to let us know how it was!
Amba– The Financial District is about to get another kosher restaurant! Opening in late July, Amba “Fidi” will be a cute, little Israeli spot located at 160 Pearl Street (right off of Wall Street), serving falafel, schwarma, and other Israeli specialties. For those who work in the area, Amba will offer delivery to lower Manhattan within a two mile radius. The restaurant will be under the supervision of Rabbi David Navarro of Staten Island. Brought to you by the owners of Falafel off the Korner.
Subaba– The expected opening date for Subaba restaurant near Yeshivah University in the Heights is in mid-July. The restaurant will be serving a variety of cold cuts, schnitzels, grilled chicken, steaks, and salads. The restaurant owner describes it as a more gourmet version of the Subway chain, Glatt Kosher, in a clean, comfortable, beautiful environment. Subaba will be located at 2565 Amsterdam Avenue.
Chef Abie Sandwich Spot– Chef Abie Maltz of
Nu Cafe 47 opened a new place in late June called Chef Abie Sandwich Spot. The space used to be his take-out and gluten free market, however he has now decided to switch gears and start making delicious, American style comfort food. Some of his specialties include Egg Rolls, Chili Dogs, The Abie Sampler, Chef Deluxe Burgers, and Pulled Brisket Sandwiches. Chef Abie, while culinary trained, brings a homemade, home-style flavor to delicious, familiar, food. The restaurant is located at 4726 New Utrecht Avenue, off 48th Street.
Jeff Nathan’s Artisanal Fried Chicken– If you haven’t already heard, Chef Jeff Nathan of Abigael’s on Broadway is opening an Artisanal Fried Chicken restaurant somewhere in Brooklyn. We cannot yet reveal the exact details but can tell you that this will be huge! We’re talking about succulent, juicy chicken with just the right herbs and spices, 18-hour brines and more. Jeff is the Director of Culinary Development at Empire Kosher Poultry and thus will only be using Empire chicken, which is 100% organic and vegetarian fed, antibiotic and hormone free. Jeff has traveled across the country recently formulating recipes for his new venture and we can’t wait for you to see it. Stay tuned for more details of the concept along with the name and location.
Pescada Second Location– Pescada announced in early July that they are opening a second location in Brooklyn. We cannot yet reveal all the details but we can tell you that they will have a party room available for all occasions which can hold up to 130 guests. You can call 347-702-5711 to book your simha today. Pescada is currently located at 509 Avenue P in Brooklyn, NY.
