PROPEL is helping community women get the training they need to do the jobs they love

"I don't even know where to start."

"How will I juggle being a mother and work to better support my family?"

"What if I'm not good enough?"

Women who are propelled into the workforce face many obstacles. By far, the largest is fear. It’s normal to fear change, but don’t allow fear to paralyze you. Take the first step.

PROPEL is a community organization dedicated to helping the women of our community discover a profession, enroll in certification courses, and cover the cost of tuition to generate higher income. PROPEL provides Life and Career Coaching to guide you every step of the way.

"We've found that the coaching is the most successful element in our formula. Having someone in your life who believes in you, telling you that you can do it, and is qualified to give you the right advice, makes all the difference," says Executive Director Florence Labaton.

Today the choices are endless, as there is an abundance of certifications available. There is more than one option out there that is right for you. PROPEL is the only community organization committed to helping women get the appropriate training in a particular vocation so that they can earn more money.

“But how will going to school and getting a job outside the home affect my family responsibilities?”

Women with small children usually want to begin careers they can manage from home. PROPEL will help you understand your options. For example, if you are artistic and exhibit a strong talent in graphic design, together with an entrepreneurial spirit, you can begin by taking online classes at your convenience.

"I love it. I wait for when the house is quiet and the kids are asleep, and I sign on to take my class. It's something I look forward to each night. It's very fulfilling, and I'm excited to graduate and start earning money doing Graphic Design," says a PROPEL Graphic Design student.

Perhaps you are great with numbers and love the flexibility of becoming a bookkeeper.

"It's great because I can do it from home. I get to stay home with my baby," says a PROPEL QuickBooks graduate.

Moms who have older children and welcome a change of pace can enroll in programs in Brooklyn or Manhattan, and take classes in person. It takes time to build a freelance business, but it allows a mom the chance to go at her own pace. It might be scary at first, but you can start small and build slowly.

Sometimes women who work and are actively raising families might feel overwhelmed at the thought of working outside the home.

"It was scary at first. I didn't know if I could do it, but Ellen (PROPEL Life & Career Coach) helped me through it," says a mother of three, working in packaging design.

PROPEL works with many women who face this issue. These women have dealt with this by communicating with their children, managing their family's expectations, and staying organized.

“I made my children part of my journey. They did their homework alongside me while I did mine,” says a working mother of two small children with a full-time job as a paralegal.

“My children know that two nights a week Mommy goes to school. I have dinner prepared and my husband comes home early. The important thing was and is to have everything prepared and have the children know the schedule," said a mother of four, working part-time.

For women who grew up using a computer and feel comfortable exploring technology, opportunities for full-time employment are abundant, and starting salaries range from $70,000 - $85,000 annually. PROPEL can guide you towards an introductory coding class, available online or at the larger coding schools in New York. Consider a career in web design, data science, or project management. Signing up for a workshop to sharpen your skill sets will not only further enhance but will also accelerate your current career.

Whether you want to work part-time or full-time, at home or in an office, there are many options available to you.  They all require honing a skill or learning a new one.  Excellent teachers are always in demand, whether they teach in our yeshivot or in a yoga studio. Great designers who are willing to go the distance and persevere to build a career find opportunities.

The path you choose should always fit your life and work for you. Whether it be a career in personal training, paralegal work, coding, cosmetology, nutrition, and more, the opportunities are only as limited as your imagination. PROPEL will help you discover the right certification course for you and support you as you follow your path to success.
