TIPS TO HELP PROTECT YOUR HOME AGAINST COLD WEATHER THIS WINTER

The approaching winter brings with it colder weather, which can cause costly damage to your home. Brooklyn Allstate Insurance Agent Joey Sasson offers the following proactive maintenance tips to help ensure your home and family are safe and sound during these winter months.

Let It Drip– During periods of extreme cold, let sink
faucets slowly drip if your pipes tend to freeze. When temperatures drop below freezing, this is a cost-effective way to help avoid cleaning up aftera pipe burst. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), one frozen pipe that bursts may result in more than $5,000 worth of water-related damage.

Keep It Clear– Hire professionals to remove snow from your roof and guttersto prevent ice dams. Ice dams form when warm air from inside your home melts snow on the roof. When melt-water reaches the cover eaves it then refreezes and creates a buildup of ice along the edge of your roofline, states IBHS. Ice dams can potentially cause water damage both inside and outside your home if not properly taken care of.

Check the Damper – When you have a fire in your fireplace, check that your damper is open and free of debris, to protect your home from carbon monoxide. Malfunctioning or improperly used appliances can emit carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas nicknamed the “silent killer” because you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it. Furnaces, stoves, ovens, water heaters, and block chimney vents can all be potential sources of carbon monoxide emissions. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on every floor of the home and near every sleeping area to help detect the presence of carbon monoxide throughout your home.

Keep It Handy– Store snow-melting materials and sand in an easy-to-access spot so that you’ll be ready to clear sidewalks and your driveway. Be sure to use a de-icer that is safe for use near animals to keep your furry friends safe this winter.
