As the temperatures start to warm up, it is a good idea to stay vigilant with your apartment security. While it may be tempting to leave your apartment windows cracked open while you’re at work, or to post vacation photos on social media, know that both of these actions open you up to potential theft.

Brooklyn Allstate agent Joey Sasson recommends the following security tips to help protect the valuables in your apartment, as we approach spring and summer.

Use outdoor lighting and timers to help deter potential burglars from your place. Some apartment buildings will try to keep walkways, parking areas, and courtyards well lit. If you notice there is a light burned out in your area, notify your landlord. If you’re heading out of town, consider installing a light timer to give the appearance that someone is home.

Talk to your landlord about having a security system installed if your apartment doesn’t have one already. There are
non-invasive security options that you can simply hang up with little to no hassle.

Store important valuables in a safe to help protect important documents like your Social Security card or precious jewelry. For another added security measure, consider a safety deposit box at your bank.

Keep vacation plans off social media until you are return home. According to Cyber Safe Identity, these postings may be a sign to potential burglars that no one is home.

Get to know your neighbors. All neighbors can help by reporting any suspicious activity around your complex. It may help for neighbors to look out for one another, and to notice when something or someone is out of the ordinary.

Always lock doors and windows. The New York Police Department recommends using a deadbolt lock with a
one-inch bolt throw or a heavy duty drop-bolt lock. If you’re running out for a quick errand, the last thing you want is to return to your apartment to find your valuables have been stolen. Keep all doors and windows locked, and be sure to utilize a securitybar in sliding patio doors or windows.

Be aware of deception crimes. Deception burglars are those who masquerade as contractors, utility workers, or some other type of professional to take advantage of unsuspecting residents. Be cautious of anyone coming to your door asking to perform repairs or access to your apartment for any reason.

A bit of caution can go a long way in helping to protect
your place and your belongings. If you feel like you need specific advice, consult with your landlord or apartment complex management company.
