Chinese Auction for Maskeel El Dal Hesed Fund and Hacham Baruch Kollel is
a Huge Success!

On Monday night, May 13th, community members gathered at the gracious home of Eddie and Ceryse Mizrahi for a Chinese auction and dinner to benefit the Maskeel El Dal Hesed Fund and Hacham Baruch Kollel. A standing room only crowd of over 150 people packed the backyard tent to hear Rabbi Ephraim Wachsman speak. First, a moving video was shown, which had many pictures of Hacham Baruch, zt”l, and a couple of short clips of him speaking, which thrilled the crowd. Rabbi Raymond Beyda then introduced Rabbi Wachsman, who was then followed by Eddie Mizrahi, who spoke of what the organization and Hacham Yaacov Ben-Haim have accomplished to date. Harry Adjmi was then called upon to speak to express his gratitude to our rabbis, past and present. Eddie and Ceryse Mizrahi were then presented with a special Lucite picture gift for their fundraising efforts on behalf of the organization.

The following day, hundreds of women attended classes given by Rabbi David Ashear, Rabbi Joey Haber, and Rabbi Shlomo Diamond. Rabbi Diamond allowed questions to be asked following his class. A fun and inspiring day was enjoyed by all attendees. If you missed the auction you can still donate by e-mailing hachambaruch@hotmail.com.

Building Collapse in Flatbush After
Car Slams into Storefront; Shomrim Catch
Hit-and-Run Driver

On May 6th, a building collapsed on Avenue P and East 5thStreet, after an
out-of-control vehicle slammed into it. Theincident prompted a massive response from Hatzolah, FDNY, and NYPD.

After an extensive search, it appeared that there was no one trapped in the rubble. The first floor of the building, a former convenience store, was vacant. Five residents who lived in the building’s second floor were not home at the time of the collapse. The upper floor also houses a real estate office, which was closed for the night.

The 20-year-old driver, Andrew Baird, of Brooklyn, got out of car and tried to run away on foot. He was apprehended nearby, thanks to volunteers from Flatbush Shomrim, who quickly canvassed the area. They were assisted by Boro Park Shomrim as well.

Baird was held on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of the accident. He allegedly had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. There are also reports that a passenger may have run away from the scene.

After a long layover between the Passover break and a very wet month of May, MSB is primed and ready to kick off the second half of the season.

On May 9thMSB introduced a new league feature, the “Thursday Night Showdown"   between The Mighty Ducks and Cobra Kai at Coyle Street. Going into the matchup both teams were desperate for wins, trying to improve their 1-3 records respectively. The night lived up to the billing and did not disappoint. With a capacity crowd on hand and a cool chill in the air with playoff aspirations for both of these talented squads, there was a playoff-type atmosphere.

Game One was scoreless going into the 6th, as reigning CY Young award winner Yaakov Seruya was blanking the Ray Esses-led Cobra Kai squad. Matching him inning by inning was the promising Eddie Harari, until rookie Lawrence Kurtz broke a scoreless tie with a bases-clearing triple to right, and the Ducks went on to win an important Game One. With their backs against the wall and the season potentially on the line, Cobra Kai gutted out an intense 7-6 victory in a game that featured spectacular defensive plays around the diamond, highlighted by young first baseman of the Ducks Joe Gindi and the Richter brothers (Marc and Albert) of Cobra Kai.

The league is extremely excited about incorporating night games into the season, and is exploring the idea of making this a weekly addition. Highlights, interviews, stats, and more can be found on the league site: www.sysoftball.com.
