New “privacy friendly” body scan machines will soon start to be used for the first time at New York area airports. In contrast with the controversial current body imaging machines, which have been criticized for showing images of passengers’ naked bodies, the new machines show a generic, computerized outline of the body designed only to expose dangerous hidden items. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) unveiled the new technology at Newark Liberty Airport last month and has plans to install them in some 40 other airports around the country.
