A new city law forbids using private or public haulers to collect electronic waste, except for recycling. The law also requires haulers and waste facility operators to provide customers with written information about options for recycling unwanted electronics.

Product manufacturers must be responsible for directing their electronic goods to waste areas, and provide free and convenient means for their collection. Some examples include mail return programs, drop off locations in stores or municipal facilities, and community collection events.

The Department of Environmental Conservation is encouraging consumers to visit its website to find out where to recycle electronic waste for free, and what types of equipment are covered by the law.
