The little known but highly crucial Keren Chana food fund, which helps supplement the food budgets of struggling families, is making a special appeal to raise money during this especially difficult time. The fund is run by volunteers of the Sephardic Congregation of Nostrand, who absorb all expenses related to administration and distribution, thereby ensuring that100 percent of donations go directly to the needy families of the community.
The Sephardic Congregation of Nostrand, founded in 1999, hosts daily minyanim and is run under the leadership of Rabbi Moshe Mayor and Nissim Lazari. The rabbi offers classes in the mornings and evenings, and a special learning program for children is held twice each week.
The rabbi also maintains a website featuring many lectures and divre Torah, as well as the current synagogue news. Every aspect of the synagogue is run by volunteers. The synagogue is unique in that it is among a select few which do not charge annual dues and additionally does not sell the aliyot on the High Holidays. A donation of $152.00 for a reserved seat includes being placed in a lottery for the High Holiday aliyot, with each seat given an equal chance to participate in all the missvot of the day.
Tax deductible donations can be made out to “Sephardic Cong. of Nostrand” and with the note “Matan Beseter” or “Keren Chana” on the bottom of the check. Checks can be mailed to Sephardic Congregation of Nostrand, 2831 Nostrand Avenue.
