Bet Din Files

I, and I imagine most (or all) readers, were very disturbed by the story told in last month’s “Files of Bet Din” article, about a prominent rabbi who was found to have leveled baseless allegations against an experienced and qualified mashgiah purely for the sake of establishing a reputation for stringency. Libel is a grievous sin, which is compounded several times over when it directly ruins a person’s livelihood. It would be disturbing enough if an otherwise observant Jewish layman committed such an offense; that this was done by a rabbi who is prominent enough that a kosher hotel specifically invited him to accompany its guests for Pesach, is shocking.

This incident raises several troubling questions, but I would like to pose one as food for the community’s thought. What would have happened if the rabbi was discovered to have committed a different kind of indiscretion – such as eating in a non-kosher restaurant? I imagine this would have caused an uproar and the community would have demanded that his identity be revealed and he be fired immediately. Is this happening now after the publication of last month’s issue? Is there any reason for us to be less angered by a rabbi’s libelous charge against a qualified mashgiah?

Global Warming Debate

Although I enjoyed the article in last month’s issue about global warming (“Global Warming and Climate Change – Fact or Fiction?”), I was very disappointed with your “inconclusive conclusion.”

I can’t begin to understand why the media is falling for this farce. Perfect case in point is the account of the ship of scientists who traveled to Antarctica to prove their theory of global warming by documenting how fast the ice shelf was melting. Ironically, the ship carrying the global warming/climate change enthusiasts got stuck in ice. It gets even better – the ship that was sent to rescue the scientists also got stuck in ice. Yet, despite this huge embarrassment – most of the liberal media outlets failed to even report this in the news.

Meanwhile, recent reports indicate that there is actually more ice now on the Antarctic shelf than ever before. Funny, that this fact has not been publicized in the media, either.

I guess the media is counting on the short-term memory of their audience. It wasn’t too long ago when scientists were warning us that the world was going to freeze over. I still recall the headline that ran in the Washington Post back in 1971 – “US Scientists See New Ice Age Coming.” The paper said, “The world could be as little as 50 or 60 years away from a disastrous new ice age, a leading atmospheric scientist predicts.”

Even The New York Times reported “Climate Changes Called Ominous”; “There is a finite probability that a serious worldwide cooling could befall the Earth within the next hundred years.”

You can be certain that if a boat of scientists got stuck in the ice back in 1971 – it would have been in the headlines throughout the country for months!

I’m no scientist, but I do believe in scientific research. I have a hard time understanding why people do not want to believe the scientists’ claim that the temperature around the world is on the rise. What do scientists have to gain by lying to the public? If anything. they have more to lose – since their reputations are at stake.

I find it very funny when I hear people ridicule the validity of global warming whenever there is a bitter cold day.

What’s even funnier, though, is the ignorance behind these jokes. A single cold snap in certain areas in the U.S. doesn’t disprove global warming. Global warming refers to the ENTIRE planet – not just the United States. People need to keep in mind that the continental United States is less than two percent of the Earth’s surface. So, there is no truthful reason to disprove global warming based on a cold winter season on the East Coast.

The facts are that since the late 19th century the temperature of our Earth’s climate system has been on the rise. Based on this fact alone – I do not feel that you need to be a scientist to understand that the Earth has been increasingly warming and is continuing to do so. This should be a concern to all of us.

Truth about Vitamins

It is so confusing these days to know if you should use vitamins, and if so, which ones are effective. It seems like every couple of months there is another report claiming that most vitamins are ineffective.

I would like to offer my own solution. Since we are able to derive nearly all of our essential vitamins from healthy foods like fish, leafy greens, fruit and nuts, our goal should be to carefully select the foods we buy for our families. If we make a conscious effort to only consume foods that contain essential vitamins, we will no longer need to even think about taking any pills.

Correction:

In the April edition of “Exploring the Wild World of Animals,” the article incorrectly stated that two of the hearts of the octopus are used to pump blood to the octopus’s lungs. However, it should have said gills – as the octopus does not have lungs.
