Seven Democratic state senators recently asked Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to investigate the allegation that the New York Police Department is spying on Muslim neighborhoods that have not done anything wrong, and to determine whether such measures violate the state constitution. An Associated Press investigation found that the NYPD has put communities under surveillance, built databases of Muslim businesses and monitored where certain Muslims went, possibly violating their religious freedom. Senators pushing for the investigation include: Kevin Parker and Velmanette Montgomery of Brooklyn, Bill Perkins and Liz Krueger of Manhattan, Gustavo Rivera and Ruth Hassell-Thompson of the Bronx and Shirley Huntley of Queens.
