Timed for the recent Palestinian movement towards a unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) in the UN, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY) presented a petition opposing the move bearing over 105,000 signatures, collected from Jews and non-Jews alike, which was delivered to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Ambassadors of Permanent Missions to the United Nations.

“A just and lasting peace is about partnership, not unilateralism,” said Michael S. Miller, Executive Vice President and CEO, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York. “This petition is a manifestation of the dramatic groundswell of opposition to the Palestinians’ attempt to avoid direct negotiations…”

Noam Gilboord, Program Coordinator, Israel and International Affairs, pointed out that the opposition to UDI was “different than being against a Palestinian state. The only thing we’re against is the method; by not negotiating with Israel, literally seeking a state without seeking peace. It should come the other way around. Peace must exist before a Palestinian state and Israel can live side by side.”
