Alenbi Modern Israeli Cuisine

With a projected early-December opening, Chef Elior Balbul’s new restaurant, Alenbi, is set to start serving Crown Heights residents very soon. You can expect a true modern Israeli menu from Chef Balbul, who previously worked with Chef Meir Adoni at his renowned Tel Aviv restaurant, Blue Sky. Think super creative dishes with impeccable plating and modern cooking techniques certified kosher under the OK. Stay tuned to the Great Kosher Restaurant Foodies Facebook Group for Alenbi updates, including the opening date!

Dougie’s Avenue J

What seems to be the most anticipated kosher restaurant opening of the Fall is just about here. Rest assured: The moment the first Fire Slammers and Onbelievable Onions hit the table we’ll be there to capture it for you. This will be Dougie’s sleekest location ever and we can’t imagine the euphoria that will unfold when the doors finally open in early November. Dougie’s Brooklyn is located at 1316 Avenue J, in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.

Upside Craft Burgers

We have some new information on the restaurant formerly known as El Gaucho Glatt. One of our spies noticed a sign for Upside Craft Burgers in the window of the 18th Avenue establishment. Looks like it will be a “craft” burger joint that promises to be a cool, casual place to hang out. They are calling it a “fine, casual” dining experience. The restaurant is located at 4102 18th Ave in Brooklyn, a few blocks off of Ocean Parkway.

Yummy Grill

Flatbush residents get ready for the new Yummy Grill, coming soon to Avenue J! The Mediterranean-style grill will be opening up in the former Odradeks location. According to their sign, Yummy Grill will be serving roasted salads, shawarma, hummus, falafel, and fresh smoothies in true Israeli tradition. We expect that they will have lunchtime student specials too.

The Gelato Bar

Can’t decide if you want to go out for a pint or a scoop? You don’t need to choose anymore. At The Gelato Bar in West End, Long Branch, they’re serving up gelato just for adults! These alcohol-infused gelatos are all pareve and made with real liquors. Please note that
The Gelato Bar is located inside the West End Bar & Grill,
which is not kosher. The Gelato Bar itself is certified kosher under the J.S.O.R. All of the flavors are made in small batches with pure spring water, natural cane sugar and all natural ingredients. The Gelato Bar is located at 100 Brighton Avenue in Long Branch, NJ.

The Juice Theory

The Juice Theory on the Jersey Shore has been open for a few years now selling their cold-pressed juices and small vegan items. Recently they expanded to a larger store on Brighton Avenue in the West End area of Long Branch. The store sells juices, smoothies, sandwiches, salads, vegan desserts, snacks, and more. Popular items include their Acai Bowls and “Make Your Own Salad” option with a choice of proteins. Its main focuses are breakfast and lunch but on Mondays nights a prix fixe dinner option is offered. The Juice Theory is located at 87 Brighton Avenue and is now under supervision of the JSOR.

Great American

Health Bar

After three decades in operation, Great American Health Bar (GAHB) will now be a Shomer Shabbat restaurant under OK supervision. GAHB is owned by the same people who own Cafe Classico up the stairs, which has always been closed on Shabbat and under the OK. While the dairy, health-oriented restaurant downstairs has been a fixture in Midtown for years, frequented by celebrities and business customers, many kosher diners have been reluctant to eat there, dissatisfied with, or wary of, the reliability of its kashrut supervision. GAHB’s new certification by the OK is likely to be a game changer that proves to be the right decision for the enterprise. The restaurant is located at 35 W 57th Street.

Mexikosher Upper

West Side

After much anticipation and speculation, Mexikosher’s Manhattan branch location has finally been revealed. The Upper West Side is now the new home of Chef Katsuji Tanabe’s Mexican Kosher casual restaurant. The restaurant is now officially open with regular hours of 11am-11pm, Sunday to Thursday, and there are already lines out the door. There is currently one other Mexikosher branch, on West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles. This year we will also see the opening of Baranda, Tanabe’s more upscale, forward dining restaurant. Mexikosher NYC is located at 100 West 83rd Street, and is under OU supervision.

Service Station

The newest dairy restaurant brought to you by the Prime Hospitality Group has opened. Service Station, located next door to the Bentley Hotel at 500 East 62nd Street in NYC, has been transformed from an old gas station into a fully updated space including an outdoor patio, full bar, and wood-burning pizza oven. Operating under the supervision of the OU, the restaurant is serving up a full menu of Italian cuisine, including handmade pizza
(gluten-free available), pasta, soup, fish, appetizers, and more. Service Station is open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour with seasonal seating for up to 200 people.

The hottest, newest restaurant in Borough Park has just opened its doors for business. Urbana is a trendy spot with a totally updated menu that is atypical of kosher dairy cafes. Think Wild Mushroom Polenta with freshly shaved Parmesan and basil oil, or a Whole Roasted Bronzini filled with mushroom and leek confit, Yukon Gold mashed potato, red grapes, and pistachio. And, you can’t forget about the brick oven pizzas and inventive appetizers. The restaurant has a rustic but modern vibe to it, with exposed brick walls, DIY-style lighting, and a fabulous ambiance. Urbana is located at 1305 53rd Street off 13th Ave in Borough Park, and is under Tarnipol Beis Din supervision.

Pescada has opened its second location, on Ocean Avenue, right off of Avenue M. The decor is quite similar to Pescada’s original location, with sophisticated, sleek white tables and chairs, grey walls and blue accents. The extensive menu is the same as in the original location, as well, offering plenty of salads, appetizers, fish, pastas, desserts, and a full espresso and smoothie menu. The large party room in the back can accommodate
70-80 people. Pescada Avenue M is located at 1776 Ocean Ave off Avenue M, and runs under the supervision of Rabbi Y. Gornish.

Chalet Cafe

You may already know about Mountain Top Steakhouse in the Chalet Hotel from last summer. Well, this year, the owner of Mountain Top has decided to open a dairy restaurant called Chalet Cafe which is open during the day, and then runs as a steakhouse at night. As the restaurant is located in a hotel, the meat and dairy dishes can be prepared in completely separate kitchens. Dishes like the Cubed Mozzarella Sticks and Middle East Panini come highly recommended. The menu boasts a full line of pastas, salads, appetizers and desserts, as well. Chalet Cafe is located at 50 Chester Road on the Chalet Hotel grounds.

Brickell Kosher Deli

Under the Kosher Supervision of Rabbi Chaim Lipskar from the Rok Family Shul of Chabad Downtown Jewish Center, Brickell Kosher Deli offers “Make-Your-Own” sandwiches, salads, and wraps. You can also choose from unique chef’s specials like their Pulled Brisket Sandwich with grilled onions, horseradish dressing, pickle, and Homestyle potato wedges. Breads are provided by Zak the Baker. The deli collaborates with great culinary minds like Chef Yos of Hassid + Hipster. Eat-in and take-out options are available. The facility is located at 35 SE 9th Street 2nd Floor.
