The New York Police Department will not be sending cops to the city’s beaches and parks to enforce new smoking bans, figuring that their manpower is better used fighting criminals and terrorists. Mayor Bloomberg plans for the new bans to be enforced by public pressure. Smoking in playgrounds is already banned, but cops do not make enforcement a priority. Parks Department staff will be on hand on city beaches to enforce the law, but the mayor hopes that ordinary citizens will inform and pressure smokers about the ban. The ban was initially proposed by the Health Commissioner in 2009, and was recently voted on by City Council.
